Project updates and developments in Nellore and surrounding places to be posted here.

  • Fonterra in talks over 40,000 cow farm in India

Dairy conglomerate Fonterra is in talks with big Indian farmer cooperative Iffco on setting up a super-size dairy farm in the world's biggest and fastest growing dairy market.

While newspaper reports out of India said a partnership deal had been reached giving Iffco a 45 per cent stake and Fonterra 30 per cent in a 40,000 cow venture, Fonterra global trade managing director Kelvin Wickham said no formal agreement has been reached and the parties are in "exploratory talks".

A report in India's Economic Times says 3000 cows will be imported from New Zealand and Australia with India supplying 10,000 cows annually for the next three years.

The report says the partnership will produce top quality milk for premium customers and that India is considering relaxing a 30-year-old regulation on cow imports for commercial use that would otherwise hamper the venture.

But Fonterra is downplaying the report. Wickham said Fonterra has "an interest" in the Indian dairy market. But as in China, "the starting point for any dairy business in India will be securing a high quality, traceable milk supply," he said.

The Economic Times said the balance of shares in the venture would be held by India's Global Dairy Health.

The report said the primary objective of the dairy farm at Nellore was import substitution and to develop India as a hub for milk exports to southeast and west Asia.

Fonterra last year exited an Indian processing joint venture, Britannia New Zealand Foods, saying it no longer fitted the company's strategic priorities.

The New Zealand farmer-owned cooperative sold its stake to partner Britannia Ltd, saying although there was a lot of growth in India, the local milk supply was fragmented and required significant development and investment to deliver an efficient supply chain for high quality fresh milk.

  • 10 model schools to get facelift in Nellore
Nellore, Sept. 24: Action plan is being prepared to improve infrastructure in the model schools being established under the auspice of Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan (RMSA) in 10 educationally backward mandals of Nellore district.

The union government funded RMSA has been launched with an aim to achieve universal access and quality secondary education.

Existing zilla parishad schools with not less than five acres have been selected in a bid to convert them as model schools under RMSA scheme.

The schools are located at Seetharamapuram, Kondapuram, A.S.Peta, Duttalur, Ottur in Kavali, Kaligiri, Brahmanapalli in Marripadu, Venkatagiri, Tallampadu in D.V.Sathram and Tada.

New buildings will be constructed in place of the old ones and facilities such as laboratories, libraries will be established in all the model schools.

Computer systems will be supplied to the schools to give exposure and on hand training in computers to the students.

Authorities have identified 105 resource persons and gave them training on the RMSA system to enable them train teachers in all the schools coming under the scheme in phased manner.

It may be mentioned here that RMSA scheme is also covering nearly 364 schools including ZP, Government and Welfare schools in the district.

However, unlike in model schools, a face lift will be given to these schools besides providing basic infrastructure.

  • CM wants incentives to SEZ to continue
    BS Reporter / Chennai/ Hyderabad September 02, 2010, 0:48 IST

Chief minister K Rosaiah has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to continue all the fiscal incentives originally envisaged for the special economic zones (SEZs) and the units therein even after introduction of the Direct Tax Code (DTC).

“I earnestly request that in the larger interest of industrial development in the country, that the central government may kindly continue all the fiscal incentives originally envisaged for the SEZs,” Rosaiah stated in his speech pointing out there were apprehensions that the incentives would be discontinued with the introduction of DTC.

In this context, he also said that the state was promoting a number of SEZs for creation of employment opportunities to youngsters.

The written speech of the chief minister was read out by state major industries minister, K Lakshminarayana, at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the NTPC-BHEL power equipment manufacturing project at Mannavaram in Chittoor district on Wednesday. Rosaiah could not attend the function due to ill health.

According to Rosaiah, the Nellore-Chittoor region is going to be a major hub for investments. It is ideally positioned with close connectivity to three international airports (Bangalore, Chennai and upcoming Tirupati) and three important seaports (Krishnapatnam, Chennai and Ennore) besides being close to the Golden Quadrilateral Expressway.

He said a large number of mega power projects were coming up in the area, which had been identified as the Manufacturing Investment Region according to the policy of the Union government.

Stating that AP was well positioned to emerge as the manufacturing hub in the country, Rosaiah informed the Prime Minister that a Global Investors Meet was scheduled to be held in the state capital in February 2011 in association with the Confederation of Indian Industry to attract large-scale investments from across the globe.

  • Iffco plans Rs 1k-cr dairy biz foray

NEW DELHI: Taking a leaf out of Amul’s book, Iffco, the world’s biggest fertiliser cooperative , is set to enter the dairy business with an over Rs 1,000-crore venture by the year-end.

The dairy venture, the first unit to go on stream at Iffco’s Kisan AEZ at Nellore, will showcase a state-of-the-art world class processing plant for processed dairy produce including cheese. It is likely to be a joint venture with an undisclosed Delhi-based business house and an Israeli dairy major.

However, the model of dairy farming envisaged is different from that of the Kaira District Cooperative (Amul) and the GCMMF. Amul has a processing capacity of around 130 lakh litres of milk a day. The Iffco venture is likely to have the capacity to process milk from around 15,000 milch animals. Holstein/Jersey cows are expected to be bred for the dairy farm to ensure quality. The idea, officials said, was that each Iffco farmer would own a share of the cows at the farm.

This will the first time in recent years that the dairy industry will actually see a venture of this size with a dairy farm attached to the processing plant. The company is still mulling over a “distinctive” name for its produce alongside the “Iffco” brand name.

Iffco MD US Awasthi said: “We are entering the sector after much deliberation. But we are not in competition with anyone since there is ample demand for quality dairy produce.”

Iffco is understood to be in the “penultimate stage of negotiations” with an Israeli dairy major. A New Zealand dairy major is also in the reckoning. The location at Nellore is considered ideal for distribution of produce to nearby metros like Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and even Mumbai, apart from many tier-II and tier-III towns in the region.

”We plan to use cold storage, maybe even dedicated trains from Nellore to transport the produce to these metros,” an official said.

Iffco plans to sell the same quality of milk at a concessional rate to domestic consumers in semi-urban and rural regions . A recent NSSO study pegged rural milk spend (of all food spend) at 15% and urban spend at 19%.

Andhra Pradesh has seen significant growth in the past on the dairy front. Chandrababu Naidu’s Heritage brand vies for space with other brands such as Creamline in tandem with the weakening of the state coop milk federation.

In early 2008, Gujarat CM Narendra Modi struck a deal with an Israeli dairy firm El bit for setting up a massive dairy farm and processing plant in the state but, following strong protests from Amul, El bit moved its $100-million project to Chittor district in AP.

  • ^^ More on that

IFFCO to set up integrated dairy at Nellore

The world's largest farmers cooperative, Indian Farmers Fertiliser Co-Operative Limited (IFFCO), on Monday said it was negotiating with two global players for setting up an integrated dairy in its upcoming food processing special economic zone (SEZ) in Nellore.

Besides, IFFCO is in talks with a Russian company for setting up a fertiliser plant there, Managing Director U. S. Awasthi said.

“We are negotiating with a firm in the U.S. and New Zealand for setting up an integrated dairy in our farm-based food processing SEZ in Nellore,” Mr. Awasthi told reporters here.

The proposed dairy envisaged an investment of Rs. 1,000 crore, he said, adding that “We expect to sign the deal before end-December.”

Besides equity partner, the overseas firm would be a management partner in the venture, he said, adding that “marketing will be done by IFFCO.”

The venture would have around 6,000 livestock, which would be imported to begin with “however, later we will develop a local cross-breed,” Mr. Awasthi said.

On hike in fertiliser prices, Mr. Awasthi said there was a 5-10 per cent increase but “farmers have not resisted it due to a hike in the support prices of food grains.” He said soil productivity in the country has come down due to the non-optimum ways of utilisation of fertilisers.

“What we need is soil productivity enhancement. We have started a new project, save the soil. Our fertilisers need to be fortified with zinc and boron. We have taken steps to fortify fertilisers produced from our plants with micro nutrients like sulphur, zinc and boron,” he said.

Mr. Awasthi said IFFCO was awaiting the Gazette notification on fortification in this regard.

On the co-operative's proposed power plant in collaboration with the Chhattisgarh Government, he said the state-owned entity was awaiting a few regulatory approvals, which were expected to come shortly.

“Everything is ready. We are only waiting for forest clearance for the coal block. The power plant work may start soon,” he said.

The proposed coal-based power plant with a total capacity of 1,320 MW is coming up in Chhattisgarh at an investment of Rs. 7,300 crore with IFFCO having a 74 per cent stake and the remaining, the Chhattisgarh Government.

  • Database of autos to prevent crime

Nellore, Nov. 19: In the wake of the growing number of crimes involving autorickshaws and autorickshaw drivers, authorities have started creating a database for all autorickshaws plying in Nellore town. A code number is being given to each autorickshaw and all details including a photograph of the driver will be displayed in the autorickshaw for the benefit of passengers.

It is enough if the passenger notes down either the vehicle number or the code number or even the name of the driver to catch them in case of a problem.

Giving details of the exercise to reporters here on Friday, the district superintendent of police (SP), Mr E. Damodar, said that they were also taking the assistance of the transport department in developing the data.

He said that traffic inspector Mr Raghava Rao had already collected the data of 9,000 autorickshaws manually and it was being computerised now. Referring to serious traffic problems in parts of Nellore town, the SP stressed the need for consistent efforts to overcome the situation.

According to the SP, police had decided to remove fish vendors and automobile mechanics along the Muttukur Road in Haranadhapuram to free road margins and bottlenecks affecting the flow of traffic from the traffic signal.

Similarly, Trunk Road between V.R. College and Gandhi statue has been declared as a ‘no parking’ area on both sides of the road. Recovery vehicles of the police wing will be stationed to remove vehicles parked without any warning to the owners.
Interestingly, police have already collected Rs 4.26 lakh as penalty for parking violations after introducing the recovery vehicles.

  • Hyundai confirms auto ancillary unit in Nellore

HYDERABAD: Several companies of South Korea, Indonesia and Singapore have expressed keenness in setting up their operations in the State.

The companies conveyed their intentions to a delegation of senior officials led by Major Industries Minister Kanna Lakshminarayana who visited these countries on a nine-day business trip. One of the major proposal was the confirmation from Hyundai Motors that it would go ahead with its proposed automobile ancillary unit near Nellore and commence operations from mid-2011.

The delegation comprised J. C. Sharma, Principal Secretary (Food Processing); R. Karikal Valaven, Industries Commissioner; Vikas Raj, Managing Director, AP State Finance Corporation, and S. Kannan, Director CII Southern Region director. Speaking to reporters here on Sunday, the Minister said Samsung Electronics had assured that it would seriously consider the plea to set up a mobile phone manufacturing facility in the State following a letter addressed by Chief Minister K. Rosaiah to the management.

The Minister said it was decided to form a consortium comprising the State government and the public/private sector trade associations of the three countries to facilitate investment in infrastructure, manufacturing and food-processing sectors.

Four South Korean firms — Mecen Ipc, Asia Cement, Samjung Electric and Dosan Heavy Industries — offered to invest in production, cement, electronic hardware and heavy engineering sectors. Seven Singapore companies expressed interest in sourcing investment in solar panel manufacturing, power plants and infrastructure.

Hyundai proposes Rs 1,500 crore investment in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: South Korean automobile group Hyundai has submitted a Rs 1,500 crore fresh investment proposal to the Tamil Nadu government and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will soon be signed, a senior official said on Friday.

"Hyundai has submitted a proposal to invest Rs 1,500 crore for setting up plants to make diesel engines and auto components. We are looking into it and soon an MoU to this effect will be signed by the government with Hyundai," Rajeev Ranjan, principal secretary of industries department, told reporters here.

Speaking to reporters on the margins of the summit on 'Sustaining Manufacturing Leadership of Tamil Nadu', organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Ranjan said the proposed investment will be the third expansion project for Hyundai in the state.

The Korean group's car maker Hyundai Motor India has two car plants at Irrungattukottai near here with a total annual capacity of 600,000 units.

Hyundai has been mulling a diesel engine plant in India with locally-sourced components to give customers a wider choice and consolidate its position in the domestic as well as overseas market.

Company officials had earlier told IANS on the condition of anonymity that a diesel engine plant will be viable with an annual capacity of 300,000 units.

The momentum towards a diesel engine plant in India is increasing now as companies are now launching diesel variants.

Currently the diesel engines for Hyundai's small cars are imported.

On the components side, it is reported that Hyundai Wia, part of the group, will be setting up a plant to make constant velocity joints and manual transmission parts in Tamil Nadu at an outlay of $5 million.

The investment proposal has come at a time when the Tamil Nadu government is planning to announce a new policy governing the auto sector - vehicle and component manufacturers.

The Korean automotive group is developing a small car for the mass market which would be launched soon.

There have also been reports of Hyundai Motor looking outside Tamil Nadu for expansion as it may not find sufficient space at its current location.

According to Ranjan, the government is planning to revise the tax incentive structure for the auto units setting up their shop in the state.

  • Hyundai proposes Rs 1,500 crore investment in Tamil Nadu

This sucks man:bash:. I don't know why AP govt is not taking up enough initiative in getting auto industry here in AP. If set up in Nellore or Chittoor districts they can use the ancillary units right across the border in Chennai and wouldn't need a whole lot of investment. Also there is lot of land availability and man power.

If set up in Nellore or Chittoor districts they can use the ancillary units right across the border in Chennai and wouldn't need a whole lot of investment. The main problem is with the AP govt. itself. Our politicians will never learn anything from neighbouring TN or Gujarat in promoting industries. Infact, TN is offering huge sops to the auto industry inspite of having lots of auto OEMs and auto component/ancilliary units. It just has a separate policy for automobile Industries.

Considering that AP has no auto based industries due to various reasons, How
many sops will it have to offer to really match the sops/ competition offered by TN? But the govt. is never interested in getting Industries.

Infact, When Hyundai asked the AP govt. to match up the sops offered by TN, for auto ancilliary unit, Mr. Rosaiah (the then CM) rejected to match the offer. Had we got that ancilliary unit ,Hyundai would have easily considered Nellore for their Diesel engine unit. we are just losing our chances when the investors are knocking our doors due to lack of speedy response or non allotment of sops.

Infact, we lost Bombardier unit to Gujarat due to lack of speedy allotment of land they asked for. I heard from some of the Industrialists saying Gujarat allots land within a few weeks whereas the AP govt. takes a few months/ years to allot it that too after so much prodding by the investors.

It's high time that our administration change and we need politicians like Narendra Modi in promoting manufacturing sector.

Recent news is that Eicher is asking for 10 year VAT exemption on it's planned motorcycle unit in Nellore. However, since our new manufacturing policy(2010--2015) is valid only for 5 years, Mr. CM has to take a decision on this.If he says No, Eicher is ready to jump to other side of our border i.e. TN.

  • SPV to execute railway link to Krishnapatnam

A special purpose vehicle, Krishnapatnam Rail Road Corporation, has been constituted to execute the Rs 300 crore railway line to link the Krishnapatnam port with the hinterland and to serve the iron ore shipments. The Andhra Pradesh government will have 13 per cent stake, with Indian Railways, exporters and private investors as venture partners.
The Krishnapatnam port, which is being developed as a deep water sea port with a capacity to handle Cape and Super Cape size vessels of more than 2,00,000 DWT ships, is gearing up to handle iron ore as an alternative facility to Chennai and Ennore ports and is expected to achieve financial closure by December 2003.
IL&FS has been appointed as the project advisors and lead managers for the company. Pre-qualification offers have been invited for the construction of the port, including two berths for iron ore and coal, mechanical ore-handling equipment, including a screening plant and conveyor belts, and break waters. Four international companies had been shortlisted for developing the facilities.
The government expects EPC bids by the first week of September and the port developer is making headway for the completion of the port as well as the railway line in about two to two-and-a-half years in order to capitalise on the fact that Chennai port will stop handling iron ore gradually.
The state government had appointed RITES as consultants to conduct a feasibility survey for laying a new railway line from Cuddapah to Krishnapatnam port without routing through Tirupati-Renugunta. RITES had indicated 130 km length of railway line to be laid between Hastavaram and Krishnapatnam port. The cost of construction of this line is estimated at about Rs 350 crore. In yet another survey, Sri Koppikar had advised the state government of the possibility of reducing the cost and development of the new line from Ontimitta instead of Hastavaram. This is expected to cost about Rs 300 crore. The port developer and the government have accepted this alternative route and decided to constitute an SPV.
The proposed new line between Ontimitta in Cuddapah district and Krishnapatnam, which runs through about 130 km, effectively reduces the distance between the ore-producing point, that is Hospet-Bellary region, and the port by about 120 km, compared to the Ennore port. This will result in a saving in freight costs of around Rs 100 per tonne of iron ore exported. This will make exporters from the country globally competitive.

  • Projects worth Rs 20,000 cr up for clearance in AP
    BS Reporter / Chennai/ Hyderabad February 10, 2011, 0:45 IST

The State Level Investment Promotion Committee, headed by the chief secretary of Andhra Pradesh, would discuss incentives to new investment proposals worth Rs 20,421 crore under the mega project category on Thursday.

Among the 25 proposals that would come up for clearance at tomorrow's meeting include a Rs 5,813-crore steel plant expansion project of SBQ Steel Limited in Nellore district, Rs 1,997 crore ferro alloys project proposed at Vizianagaram by Sarda Metals and Alloys Limited, Rs 1,687 crore inorganic chemical plant of KPR Chemicals, Rs 1,088 crore steel plant expansion project at Vizianagaram by Maa Mahamaya Industries Limited and a Rs 276-crore tractor manufacturing unit by Mahindra & Mahindra at its existing plant in Zahirabad.

The committee would discuss various incentives sought by these companies and make recommendations to the State Level Investment Promotion Board (SIPB) headed by the chief minister, according to government officials.

The state offers incentives in the form of concessions or waiver of sales tax (VAT) apart from providing power and training subsidy to industrial projects under the general policy framework. The SIPB route is meant for mega investments for which the board uses discretionary powers to decide on the quantum of incentives, and on providing roads and power at the doorsteps etc, over and above the general policy on a case by case basis.

    Cement plants
The government has received seven proposals for setting up cement plants as the state has huge limestone reserves, the key input in cement manufacturing.

The big ticket investments are that of JSW Cement Limited for setting up a Rs 1,500-crore cement plant in Kurnool district, UltraTech Cement's capacity expansion (Rs 1,200 crore) in Anantapur district, Jaypee Cement Limited's Rs 1,200 crore greenfield plant in Krishna district and a Rs 1,000-crore cement plant in Kadapa district by Dalmia Cement Limited.

KCP Limited, Orient Cement Limited and NCL Industries Limited are also setting up cement units in the state though the investments for these plants are in the range of Rs 265-567 crore.

    Edible oil refinery
About five companies have sought incentives for their edible oil refinery plants proposed in Nellore district as the newly-developed Krishnapatnam Port has emerged as a hub for edible oil refineries in South India in recent times.

These apart, Royal Enfield has proposed a motorcycle manufacturing plant in Sri City SEZ in Nellore district with Rs 250 crore.

    In Telangana
Interestingly, investments totalling around Rs 2,000 crore of the total proposals would flow into the Telangana region.

In addition to M&M's tractor unit and three small cement units that have been proposed in the region, TMT Tyres Private Limited and Hinduja Foundries are setting up a Butyl Tube manufacturing plant and an iron castings unit respectively in Medak district near Hyderabad.

  • NCC hopes to tie up funds for Krishnapatnam project by May
    Hyderabad, Feb. 27:

NCC Ltd, formerly Nagarjuna Construction Company Ltd, on Sunday announced that the company will achieve financial closure by May for the Rs 7,000-crore, 1,320-MW thermal power project it is setting up in partnership with Gayatri Projects at Krishnapatnam near Nellore in Andhra Pradesh.

The company hinted it may dilute stake in NCC Infra, its subsidiary, to a private equity player in the course of the year, to meet the equity requirement for some projects.

PFC and REC have agreed to pump in Rs 3,200 crore, which is part of the Rs 5,200-crore debt portion, and for the rest, NCC is negotiating with SBI and ICICI Bank. “We do not see much hurdle in closing the equity portion,” Mr Y.D. Murthy, Executive Vice-President, Finance, said.
    Coal linkage

The company recently picked up 55 per cent stake in Nelcast thermal project at Krishnapatnam for Rs 150 crore. The coal linkage for the project has been achieved with Coal India Ltd agreeing to re-allot the coal initially meant for 1320-MW thermal project at Sompeta in Andhra Pradesh.

“The power project will have 70 per cent coal from Mahanadi Coal Fields, to be brought to Krishnapatnam through Paradip port. Rest will be imported. About 830 acres required for the project has been acquired, and all mandatory clearances, including environment are in place,” he said.

“We have applied afresh for environmental clearance for the Sompeta power project and are confident that we will secure the necessary clearances from the Ministry for Environments and Forests, which will enable us to implement it during the XII Plan period,” he said.

Providing business outlook, Mr Murthy said that the company was confident of achieving a top line growth of 20 per cent a year over the next two-three years with about 15 per cent of the business from overseas. “We now have an order book of about Rs 17,200 crore and hope to consolidate this further,” he said.

“The last couple of quarters have been tough for infrastructure companies, both in terms of securing new orders, and during implementation due to delays in clearances from the client side. To add to this, the interest rates have been causing concern. All these put together have impacted the margins. We will be able to close the year with revenues of Rs 6,600 crore against initial projection of Rs 7.000 crore,” he said.

The company said that it will be able to commission two more road project before April this year. NCC plans to tread cautiously with regard to real estate business.
    Name, logo change

The company management on Sunday announced name change to NCC Ltd, with a new logo with immediate effect.

Mr A. Ranga Raju, Managing Director of NCC, said, “The new name and logo reflect our rapid transformation from a large construction company to an integrated infrastructure group, creating immense value for both the internal and external stakeholders.

“The rebranding symbolises remarkable reputation and trust we have earned through 32 years of dedicated well structured business. The company has changed logos of all group companies too with immediate effect.”

  • NIOT plans to set up seafront research facility in Nellore (http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/niot-plans-to-setseafront-research-facility-in-nellore/429826/)

The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, is planning to build a large seafront facility in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh. The facility on the seacoast would work on various applications and technologies aimed at utilising ocean resources.

The institute, which has already identified a couple of locations in association with state government agencies, proposes to set up a cluster of laboratories and other infrastructure in an area of 200 acres. The proposed facility, which will be one-of-its-kind in the country, would be a major expansion of its current activities in the area of ocean technology applications, including deep sea technology and ocean mining.

The institute is now working on low temperature thermal desalination, deepsea technologies, remotely operable vehicles and deepsea submersibles, ocean observation systems and ocean acoustics, among others. The facility will be designed to undertake all the major programmes, including submersibles and gas hydrates, marine sensors and electronics, energy, coastal engineering research and marine biotechnology, which require actual working in sea conditions.

State government’s nodal agency APInvest CEO Pratap Madireddy said the institute was planning to spend about Rs 250 crore to build initial infrastructure. Apart from seeking land near the Indian Space Research Organisation's satellite launch facility (SHAR), the institute has also sought another 50 acres for housing administration and residential facilities for scientists and other staff working.

Established in 1993, the institute has rapidly grown its activities on its 50-acre campus in Chennai and now wants to scale up various research initiatives that were taken up in smaller laboratory conditions. For example, though the institute has gained substantial experience in desalination, more optimisation is required in components that go into thermal cycle and vacuum systems for large-scale production and commercialisation of these applications. This is possible only if the institute sets up a seafront facility housing a desalination research laboratory.

It also proposes to set up a jetty and dedicated berthing facilities for various coastal research vessels manned by the institute at the new facility. At present, these are berthed at fishing harbours and main ports.

It will also undertake activities in development of prototype systems, validation of indigenously developed marine systems in the ocean, according to a proposal submitted to the state government by the institute.

  • Krishnapatnam Port region of Nellore emerging as edible oils hub

The Krishnapatnam Port region in the Nellore district is slowly emerging as a hub for edible oil refineries with eight firms setting up refineries at Pantapalem in Muthukur mandal, close to the port. Six more companies have expressed interest to set up their plants near the port.

The port has laid a pipeline to the area where the units are located, to unload crude palm oil directly from the ships. Proximity of the port to Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and availability of land in the area has been attracting industrialists to set up their units in the region.

Gemini Edible Oils, Saraiwala Industries Pvt Ltd, Krishnapatnam Oil and Fats Pvt Ltd, Emami Biotech Pvt Ltd and South India Fats and Oils Pvt Ltd have started operations among eight units established already at Pantapalem. The other three units are expected to start operations this year.

  • A Silver Lining in India’s Coal Crisis (http://india.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/04/20/a-silver-lining-in-indias-coal-crisis/)

A power crisis in energy-starved India that has stalled the construction of thermal plants doesn’t strike one immediately as a piece of good news.

But for activists and many villagers in areas where power plants are slated to be built, it’s a silver lining.

In Nellore on the southeastern coast of India, a port was built four years ago that could draw in coal. More than two dozen large plants were then proposed. And the electricity produced could power the state, Andhra Pradesh, which has crippling blackouts that can last several hours, if not days, in some areas.

Today, however, most of the plants have dim prospects. Cows graze placidly on land that had been bought by power companies to build plants. Day laborers painstakingly hack trees to clear the land. There’s no rush. The power plants are missing their most important ingredient – coal. That’s because of an insufficient domestic supply of the black rock. And imported coal has become unviable after India’s biggest supplier, Indonesia, recently doubled coal prices.

“So far nothing has been commissioned,” said Dinesh Kumar, a senior energy department official. He added that only a handful of the power plants are likely to get built.

But the stalled work brings relief for activists and villagers who were alarmed at the rapid pace at which power plants had been approved in Nellore.

“Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district is fast becoming the state’s dumping yard for intensely polluting coal-based thermal plants,” states a January report from the Human Rights Forum in Andhra Pradesh. “The appraisal bodies have been clearing these projects one-by-one, without looking at the compound impact of all these projects taken together.”

The group said the projects together would have contaminated the surroundings with chemicals, and 2,700 tons of sulfur and 130,000 tons of toxic ash would have been spewed into the environment.

Local officials say that the estimated 25,000 megawatts of power that would have been generated if all the planned plants were built is unlikely. Power plants being built in the next three years will have a combined capacity of 15,000 megawatts, according to data provided by government officials.

A research group that lobbies for sustainable and equitable development says that environmental clearances are being granted at a rate which is more than six times the actual installation of plants in India.

Like other sectors, the shortage of power reflects a bungled approach to industrial development in India.

“We don’t have clear-cut legislations in India like the Clean Air Act in the U.S.,” said Vijay Kumar, a doctor in Nellore who was involved in the protests against the plants. He said that he treats about two people every day who have respiratory infections, many who had worked in an old local thermal plant.

A short distance from one of the power plants in Nellore, at a tribal hamlet of the Yanadis, a marginalized community, villagers are apprehensive about the potential pollution of the plant. One fisherman said that the ongoing construction had reduced his catch of fish at the close-by Buckingham Canal. In surrounding villages, residents say they don’t see any benefit from the emerging plants. Some point out that their education and skill levels are unlikely to get them jobs at the plants.

Luckily for those opposed to the plants, it doesn’t look like the emerging plants will be fueled anytime soon. Coal production is increasing at an average of 5 percent a year while power plant capacity is growing between 10 and 15 percent. The irony is that India has one of the world’s largest reserves of coal but state-owned Coal India, which controls 80 percent of production, isn’t digging fast enough. That hasn’t stopped it from winning a “company of the year award”.

  • Village maps get ready (http://www.deccanchronicle.com/channels/cities/regions/nellore/village-maps-get-ready-032)

To facilitate easy identification of government and private lands in villages, the district administration has prepared village maps in colour, for 1,201 villages in SPSR Nellore district. The exercise was taken up at the instance of joint collector Saurabh Gaur using computers for a graphic description of the villages with specific colours.

To facilitate easy identification of government and private lands in villages, the district administration has prepared village maps in colour, for 1,201 villages in SPSR Nellore district. The exercise was taken up at the instance of joint collector Saurabh Gaur using computers for a graphic description of the villages with specific colours.

For instance, yellow indicates Co-operative Joint Farmers’ Society (CJFS) lands, green is the indicator for forest lands, blue for water bodies, brown for assigned lands and red for government lands.

Survey numbers are also mentioned with border markings for the benefit of the registration wing.

Speaking to this newspaper, Mr Saurabh Gaur said that the 6 ft x 4 ft size village maps will be available at Mee Seva counters for a nominal fee.

He reminded that one had to make several rounds of revenue offices to obtain such maps in the past and their initiative put an end to such ordeals.

He said that the maps will help them during reviews and are also useful to prepare for court cases related to land disputes. He said that computerisation of day-to-day transactions pertaining to fair price shops has already started, to ensure transparency in operations.

The dealer has to enter the transaction after the sale and submit a daily report with all details to the Civil Supplies wing for computerisation.

“This will enable us to check the stock position and release commodities accordingly, for the following month. Details will be made available for audit by people to detect irregularities by dealers. In some cases, dealers are recording transactions without supplying commodities to ration cardholders and the data will help consumers expose the fraud,” Mr Saurabh Gaur said.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India has initiated a school-based screening program for diabetes on pilot basis in six Districts namely Nainital (Uttarakhand), Theni (Tamil Nadu), Nellore (Andhra Pradesh), Dibrugarh (Assam), Bhilwara (Rajasthan), Ratlam (Madhya Pradesh). Fund to each district has been released for the purpose. The screening is primarily focused on school children of 1st to 10th standards in the age group of 5 to 15 years. The screening programme is in progress in the above cited 6 Districts.

The School Health Programme (SHP) under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) as the public sector programme specifically focused on school going children and adolescents in the 6-18 years age group enrolled in Government and Government aided schools is already in place.

The SHP was launched to address the health needs of school going children. The Program at the National level has been developed to provide uniformity / guidance in implementation of operational framework for State initiatives. The National School Health Programme includes biannual health service provision through screening, health care and referral for disease, deficiency and disability. The main focus is to address the health needs of children, both physical and mental, and in addition, it provides for nutrition interventions, physical activities and counselling. Identified children, who require further service support, are connected with secondary and tertiary facilities within Public Health Infrastructure. Weekly supervised provisions of Iron-Folic acid tablets and biannual deworming is included.

Several studies have contributed to overwhelming evidence that indicates the increase in type 2 diabetes amongst children and adolescents. Major risk factors of diabetes are un-healthy diet, obesity and lack of physical exercise.

Rajya Sabha member and Congress candidate for the Nellore Parliament seat T. Subbarami Reddy has been planning to organise a convention at national-level to mobilise investments for industries in Nellore district soon after elections.

He disclosed this while speaking to media persons here on Tuesday. He said that the idea behind the convention was to enhance industrialisation to generate employment for the youth of the district. He also indicated his plans to establish a cricket stadium in Nellore town.

Referring to a host of canals passing through Nellore, he said that he would seek central government help to modernise these. Mr Reddy participated in road shows along with Union minister of state for human resources D. Purandareswari in Nellore two town areas and Nellore rural constituency on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Purandareswari dwelt at length on the commitment and ability of Mr Subbarami Reddy to achieve goals related to development. “He developed Visakhapatnam in all respects and will do the same for Nellore. He is capable of getting any work done, either at the state or at the Centre,” she assured, appealing to people to elect him.

She took a dig at former MP and YSR nominee for the Nellore Lok Sabha seat Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy for not raising any issue on the development of Nellore in the Lok Sabha.

  • TSR keen to fulfil his poll promises (http://www.deccanchronicle.com/channels/cities/regions/nellore/tsr-keen-fulfil-his-poll-promises-524)

Despite his defeat in the recent byelection for the Nellore Parliament seat, Rajya Sabha member, Dr T. Subbarami Reddy, is going to fulfil the promises he made during the electioneering with respect to deve-lopment of Nellore city.

He will also take up the construction of a 900-seat capacity AC auditorium and shelters in two government hospitals in Nellore town for aides of patients with his own funds to the extent of Rs.12 crore. TSR Kala Parishad general secretary Dodla Varada Reddy disclosed this during a press conference at TSR’s office here on Tuesday.

He said that the Kasthuri Devi Vidyalayam committee had, in principle, agreed to provide one acre for the auditorium. According to Mr Varada Reddy, the auditorium will be handed over to the committee after construction. The committee will manage the auditorium and revenue from the facility will also go to them. The TSR Kala Parishad requested the committee to extend concession on tariff to artists holding cultural programmes.

Approval from the Medi-cal and Health Infrastru-cture Corporation is awaited to take up the construction of shelters at DSR government headquarters hospital and Jubilee maternity hospital in Nellore. These shelters are meant for the aides of patients.

With respect to Mr Subbarami Reddy’s promise to mobilise funds for the Rs.458 crore estimated underground drainage scheme for the Nellore civic body, Mr Reddy has been planning to mobilise funds from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewable Mission. Although JNNURM takes up such projects in cities with a population of 10 lakh, a request is being made to include Nellore as a special case.

Mr Varada Reddy said, “JNNURM will provide 80 per cent of the project cost and the rest has to borne by the civic body. To provide sanitation and drinking water facilities in 138 slum areas in Nellore, a pilot project under Rajiv Awaas Yojana is being planned at an estimated cost of Rs.60 crore,” Mr Reddy said.

He said that the proposal related to an airport for Nellore was being taken up with the Civil Aviation Department and is likely to be under BOT basis. Mr Subbarami Reddy is also keen on transferring the Nellore-Mumbai state highway to the National High-ways wing to lay a four lane highway, he added.

  • Nellore fine rice to reach market in August (http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/industry-and-economy/agri-biz/article3616627.ece?homepage=true&ref=wl_home)

    HYDERABAD, JULY 8:
The availability of rice in Andhra Pradesh is set to go up next month.

Nellore fine rice is expected to reach the market in August, increasing the general availability of rice.

Ms Minnie Mathew, State Chief Secretary, informed the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, of this development at a high-level review meeting on price control here on Saturday.

Except in the case of super fine rice and Bengal gram, the rates of dals, vegetables and oils were either stable or showing a slightly decreasing trend compared to the previous week, she said.

    HELP FARMERS

The Chief Minister directed the civil supplies department to coordinate with rice millers and to ensure better availability of fine rice stock in Rythu Bazaars at reasonable rates.

Reviewing the rainfall situation amid a delayed monsoon, Mr Reddy asked his ministers to take alternative measures to mitigate the problems of farmers, drinking water scarcity etc.

The officials said delay in the monsoons had occurred even in previous years and that the IMD was forecasting good rains in the coming days. Inflows into the Tungabhadra and Godavari had just started, the officials told the Chief Minister.

    BIO-DIVERSITY MEET

The Chief Secretary said in the meeting that Rs125 crore has been released for the beautification of Hyderabad City in time for the ensuing International Bio-Diversity Conference to be held in October.

The conference is expected to see around 8,000 delegates from 193 countries.

The Chief Minister directed the officials to speed up work on the proposed COP-II plaque, Museum, Park and the possibility of establishment of a world class aquarium promised by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, according to a press release.

  • Nellore civic body to own fuel outlet (http://www.deccanchronicle.com/channels/cities/regions/nellore/nellore-civic-body-own-fuel-outlet-001)

The Nellore civic body is going to be the first in the state and second in the country to have its own petrol bunk to address the fuel needs of its fleet of 96 vehicles. Surat in Gujarat is the first municipality in the country to have its own petrol bunk.

The outlet for the Nellore Municipal Corporation was set up by the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and is ready for inauguration. Corporation authorities are waiting for the dates of Nellore rural and town legislators as well as newly elected Nellore MP Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy to attend the inaugural function.

Dr T.S.R. Anjaneyulu, commissioner of Nellore municipal corporation, said that they will save a minimum of Rs.2 lakh per month with this petrol outlet. The idea to have a fuel outlet for the civic body was conceived, following pilferage and private petrol bunks’ refusal to wait for payment of dues, he added.

Incidentally, the civic body did not spend any money and the BPCL itself invested Rs.7 lakh for the facility. Corporation vehicles involved in the transportation of garbage among other activities, need 40,000 litres of diesel per month and the direct saving will be 72 paise (commission per litre) on every litre.

Additional savings for the corporation is that the movement of vehicles is being monitored through the vehicle tracking system.

All vehicles have been fitted with global positioning system (GPS) devices to improve overall efficiency, effectiveness, transparency and accountability in all their logistic operations.

Mr Anjaneyulu claimed that they are the first to introduce the transport monitoring system (TMS) with GPS technology.

“TMS gives the live location of the vehicle, and the system will give an alert if a vehicle stops for more than a given time or deviates from defined routes, besides generating start/stop reports and truck summary with kilometres travelled,” Mr Anjaneyulu noted.

Government should be careful in choosing Nellore and select it only after detailed marine borehole investigations. The sea bed in the nearby Reliance Krishnapatnam Ultra Mega Power Plant consisted of very soft soil for more than 25 m and they could not design construction of breakwaters for seawater intake and coal jetty.

Navy has already taken objection to Nakkapalli.

Hopefully a decision will be taken after due diligence and comparison of all alternatives.

  • Hyderabad Aug 8:

The Krishnapatnam port in Andhra Pradesh set a new record in the Indian ports sector by discharging 1.22 lakh tonnes of coal in 24 hours using the conventional unloading system.
MV Cohiba, carrying 1.61 lakh tonnes of coal for JSW Steel Ltd, berthed at the port at 5.30 a.m on August 6.
he port had earlier discharged 1.06 lakh tonnes of steam coal in July last year.

The Krishnapatnam Port Container Terminal, the container business arm of the port, is gearing up to handle new scheduled calls beginning this month. The terminal, last month, added four gantry cranes of Keppel Fels and new mini-bagging machines, installed new hopper and conveyor systems in warehouses and built new sidings to handle the bulk cargo at the port, a company statement said.

The Krishnapatnam port, developed and operated by the $5-billion Navayuga Group, is executing a Rs 4,000-crore phase-II development programme.
The port, which has five multi-purpose berths with a draft of about 15 million tonnes (mt), handles a little over 16 mt, as against the phase-I installed capacity of 25 mt.:)

The district administration is all set to launch two new schemes on the occasion of Independence Day on Wednesday. One of the schemes, Pragna is meant to provide computers with Internet connection to welfare hostels in association with industrial houses in the district. Industries have supplied two computers each to 100 hostels in the district and Internet connections are being given to the hostels now.

Hostels having students studying classes VIII to X have been selected for the Pragna scheme. The idea behind is to provide Internet exposure to hostel students. The other scheme christened as e-Vani is intended to keep white ration cardholders informed of the availability of rice and kerosene in the 1,600-odd Fair Price shops across the district.

Cell phone numbers of 20 cardholders under each ration shop limits have been collected to inform them on the availability of stock through voice messages as soon as the stock reaches the fair price shop from the mandal-level stock points. The exercise is meant to curb the movement of commodities allotted for white ration cardholders from reaching the open market.

Speaking to this newspaper, district collector B. Sreedhar said that officials manning the mandal-level stock points will send information on transportation of essential commodities to ration shops to a server soon after the stock is lifted from the godown. The server, in turn, will generate voice messages and transmit these to ration cardholders, he added.

Referring to the Pragna scheme, he said that they had already supplied computers to select hostels and Internet connections were being given to them now. He said that finance minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy will inaugurate the programme at a welfare hostel in Nellore town on Wednesday.

  • Emu farming on the rise in Nellore district (http://www.thehindu.com/news/states/andhra-pradesh/article3792348.ece)

    http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/01182/HY19_P3_EMU_1182275f.jpg

The cultivation of emu birds for their eggs, chicks, mutton and oil has reported a steady increase in different parts of Nellore district, ever since its farming began in 2006.

Now, the Nellore District Emu Farmers’ Association (NDEFA) has got as many as 25 members, who continue farming emu considering the good returns. The population of emu birds in the district has risen to 3,500 with farmers and traders coming here regularly from Maharashtra, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka for its products.

The attractive part of emu cultivation is that all parts of the bird fetch a price for farmers, which starts at egg stage. An emu egg costs Rs.1,500. The bird lays 15 to 20 eggs once every 18 months throughout its 40-year lifespan.

NDEFA secretary D. Prabhakar Reddy says that the emu mutton is recommended as healthy food since it has zero cholesterol and high protein and its oil has medicinal values effective even for paralytics. Emu mutton is sold at Rs.350 per kg while a chick above 3 months fetches Rs.5,000.

An adult emu bird weighs about 40 kg with four to five kg oil likely to be extracted from each bird. The oil has high demand as it has medicinal and therapeutic values.

At his farm at Ramapuram village in Kodavalur mandal, Mr. Prabhakar Reddy raises nearly 400 emu birds. “The demand is slowly increasing. We are getting enough returns. There is demand now from other States too for all emu products here,” he says.

A pair of adult emu birds brings the farmers nearly Rs.50,000 in the present market. As cutting facilities are not available, the farmers arrange it themselves to meet the local demand for emu mutton.

At the farm, an adult emu bird is given one kilo feed everyday. The emu feed consists of a mixture of maize corn, cotton seed, soya and so on.

Major port all set to come up in Prakasam district

ONGOLE: Prakasam district, which has been long awaiting a real-time development project, on a par with other coastal districts, is all set to get a major project. The state government has cleared a port proposal at Ramayapatnam.

The Centre is also likely to give its nod shortly and spend nearly Rs 7000 crore for the port construction in the next five years. Prakasam is the only district on the coastal belt which has not witnessed any development despite being rich with natural resources compared to the neighbouring districts.

When the state government announced a massive port and an industrial corridor, Vanpic, five years ago, land rates in all coastal mandals skyrocketed. The promoters have landed in jails, is different story. Even though While hopes getting dashed as the Vanpic project did not materialise, the Centre announced a boon to the state with a promise to construction of a major port provided a suitable land was found for the same. In spite of the state government moving slowly, the Centre itself pushed the proposal and urged the state government to complete the initial formalities of identifying the land.

Curiously, the state government listed Ramayapatnam near Ulavapadu mandal in Prakasam as one of the probable locations for construction of a port as initially it thought that Nakkapalli (Visakhapatnam) and Dugarajapatnam (Nellore) were more ideal for the project.

However the technical committee appointed by the Centre found Ramayapatnam to be comparatively a better location than the other two and asked the state government for its opinion. Because of the presence of massive granite factories, tobacco export units and aqua export houses, Ramayapatnam port has been considered more economically viable than others.

Even at this stage, influential ministers in the state cabinet, Ganta Srinivasa Rao (Visakhapatnam) and Anam Ramanarayana Reddy (Nellore) wanted to take the project to their native places by promising to rectify the deficiencies pointed out by the technical committee. They, however, were forced to withdraw from the race following the objections raised by defence organisations leaving Ramayapatnam as lone contender.

Sources said that district administration was already instructed to get ready to acquire about 961 hectares in Ulavapadu mandal and 1164 hectares in Gudlur mandal. In addition, nearly 2200 families have to be evacuated from seven neighbouring villages. District collector has reportedly sought Rs 215 crore for taking up relief and rehabilitation works.

Close to national highway and railway main line, Ramayapatnam is likely to change the fortunes of the district once the port project becomes a reality.

Nellore: Chairman of AP Legislature Committee on Welfare of Backward Classes G Thippeswamy directed the authorities concerned to fill the vacant posts in various government departments with BC candidates as per BC quota.

He arrived here on Tuesday as part of his three-day visit to the district. He held review meetings with various heads of government departments. The committee members led by Thippeswamy visited Vikrama Simhapuri University and enquired with the lecturers the amenities being provided to the students and implementation of the fee reimbursement scheme.

When the leaders of student organisations complained to the chairman over the vacant backlog BC posts, the vice chancellor Rajarami Reddy explained that at least 8 years experience is a prerequisite to fill assistant professor posts, which deferred the recruitment process. Thippeswamy interacted with students to get first hand information about the quality of education, food and other amenities.

  • ^^ Ulavapadu in Prakasham district is the most likely site since there are no other ports in that district. Moreover if Durgarajupatnam might have problems wrt Krishnapatnam port.

Durgarajupatnam is 34 km from Krishnapatnam. Moreover there was an existing port and harbour at Durgarajupatnam . It was the first port and harbour before the East India company could procure the 4 villages from Achyutha ramarayalu to build the present day Chennai port and harbour.
Durgarajupatnam was an income generating port and harbour even during Krishnadevaraya's regime. Later it was named as Blackwood harbour as it was Vice admiral Blackwood who popularised it during East India company's operations. It was famous for Calico cloth exports to Great Britain.
So none of the names that you mentioned are any competition to Durgarajupatnam. More over 4000 acres can be easily acquired at Durgarajupatnam without any difficulty if necessary

  • Sullurpet which is just 1 hour drive from Chennai by NH-5 or EMU has the potential of having an exclusive SEZ for film studios and film related industries in about 5000 acres located on either side of Kalangi river near Sullur peta . This location has the advantages of popular out door film shooting locations like Pulicat lake, ubbalamadugu etc., All friends on this forum should make efforts to set up this SEZ in not less than 5000 acres as early as possible. The proximity of Sullurpet to Kollywood makes it an ideal alternative for Chennai where it has become impossible to own or sustain a film studio in the heart of Chennai i.e., Kodambakam to Vadapalani. The studio owners in Chennai would be too willing to give their studios for development and shift to Sullurpet which is almost on the outskirts of Mega city limits of Chennai now.Influential friends on this forum should try to convince the politicians of Nellore district to get Tamil, Malayalam film industry to Sullurpet.

  • Sub: Need to produce more and more clean energy-Potential of Railways, NHAI and large tracts of irrigation canals in various states to produce solar energy for captive utilization as well as for selling to the national power grids—Regarding.

There is huge potential to produce solar power in PPP model utilizing the space over our Railway net work , irrigation canals, National highways and national waterways etc., The power generated can be bought back by irrigation departments for using the same for their various lift irrigation schemes, Railways ,National highways and National Inland waterways for their captive use and can be sold to the national grid in case of any surplus.
The proposal requires thorough techno-feasibility studies and a task force needs to be set up with all the stake holders. This would relieve the nation of the hassles related to land acquisition, spending huge amount on importing crude oil from Gulf, pollution ,besides ensuring protection and shade to our highways from getting damaged due to rains and creation of jobs to our unemployed youth. 100% FDI may be allowed in this sector as it requires huge capital and latest technology which we lack.

Puram & B.N.Kandriga mandals of Sathyavedu assembly constituency in Chittoor district-– Regarding.

More than 3 Tmc ft of water is going waste into the sea every year due to lack of sufficient storage capacity . The existing 2 reservoirs across Kalangi river at Kalathur and Anavykandriga have together a total storage capacity of around 400 mcft only. 3 flood days are sufficient to fill these 2 reservoirs and the yield in remaining flood days have no where to go except sea. The irrigation department have been in a very deep slumber over proposals to expand , strengthen and modernize the existing 2 reservoirs since 5 decades.

Be that as it may Chittoor district has recently celebrated it’s 100 th year of formation .In view of the stringent laws relating to land acquisition and also near impossible modalities pertaining to forest clearance the only other option left before us is to go for Mini Anicuts across Kalangi river using Run-of River / step ladder technology which has been widely used in China. Our former Chief engineer and later consultant to United Nations Shri T.Hanumantha Rao garu is a strong votary and exponent of this technology. As Kalangi river is known for it’s flash floods and the river is full of boulders with no sand deposits at all the same technology can be replicated with respect to Kalangi river also.In view of the Chennai- Bangalore industrial corridor, Sricity SEZ and also the upcoming hubs it’s necessary to ensure ground water levels in this area as it’s a potential residential and educational Hub for the future.
Mini anicuts may be planned after necessary feasibility and investigation studies across Kalangi river at the following places subject to technical viability.

The three non-major ports on the AP coast, including Gangavaram and Kakinada ports, together handle a throughput of 40 million tonnes.

    HYDERABAD, APRIL 1:
The Andhra Pradesh Government is planning to set up a dedicated truck terminal and logistics hub in Nellore district as part of the logistics requirement in the Bangalore-Chennai-Krishnapatnam port freight corridor.

The project, which will be taken up by the AP Industrial Infrastructure Corporation, with financial assistance from the Centre, is likely to become operational within a year. The facility will come up at Venkatachalam with an estimated investment of about Rs 40 crore.

“This corridor is experiencing increased movement of trucks and container vehicles flowing in and out of the Krishnapatnam and other non-major ports on the Andhra Pradesh coast. There is a need for a truck terminal and logistics hub,” J. Geetha Reddy, AP Minister for Major Industries, told media persons here today.

Currently, cargo-laden trucks are parked haphazardly in this region. The proposed terminal, to be set up over 51 acres, will initially provide basic logistics services and later add other services related to export and import of cargoes.

Krishnapatnam port, which has five multi-purpose berths with a draft of about 15 mts, handles a little over 16 million tonnes, as against the phase-I installed capacity of 25 mt.

The three non-major ports on the AP coast, including Gangavaram and Kakinada ports, together handle a throughput of 40 mt. A bulk of these cargoes moves down south, passing through the Bangalore-Chennai-Krishnapatnam port freight corridor.

In addition to these ports, another two are coming up at Machilipatnam, with a proposed initial capacity of 20 mt and Nizampatnam (15 mt).

“The land for the project has been acquired. The complex will be processing 300 tonnes of hides and skin per day. The Centre has released Rs 15 crore as grant, while the State Government released Rs 10 crore to start off the project,” Geetha Reddy said.

Not any more .He started delivering goods and winning the confidence of people from all 3 regions of the state. If he removes all the tainted ministers and facilitate the prosecution of the actual culprit during YSR regime , the so called adviser who is still at large, Kiran will grow in stature and capabilities by leaps and bounds. No doubt about this.He should also convince RINL to set up major steel plants in Bayyaram and also in cuddapah by allocating captive mines in substantive quantity /acerage to the PSU Co RINL.

New ports to come up in West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh
New Delhi, May 9 (IANS) The union cabinet Thursday approved a shipping ministry proposal to set up new major ports in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), which met here in the evening, decided to set up a major port at Sagar Island in West Bengal through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode and another new port at Dugarajapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
An official release said the existing port facilities at Kolkata and Haldia are riverine ports and are facing severe draught limitations, because of the adverse morphological changes in Hooghly River which results in regular siltation. The deep draught port at Sagar Island would obviate the need for heavy maintenance dredging and would be able to handle large-sized vessels.
It said the rapid industrial growth in the hinterland of Visakhapatnam Port has rendered it necessary to have another major port in Andhra Pradesh. The new major port will facilitate the economic development of the state.

  • ^^ I think the Krishnapatnam port being a private one, has an exclusive coastline of about 60 kilometers. That's the reason why Ramayyapatnam/Ullavapadu was selected by the central government.

The keen tussle for the location of the second major public sector port in the State is apparently over with the Union Cabinet zeroing in on Durgarajupatnam in Nellore over Ramayapatnam in Prakasam district after weighing all pros and cons.

Though the official announcement about the Union Cabinet approval for the second major port was made on Thursday, it did not name the location. Reliable sources here, however, confirmed that it is Durgarajupatnam.

Though the approval for the second major public sector port in the State, coming up decades after the Visakhapatnam Port was a foregone conclusion, the final choice certainly came as a surprise to many in the government for Ramayapatnam had been preferred by it all along. This was because Ramayapatnam had least objections either on security or environmental aspects among the three places identified, including Nakkapalli in Visakhapatnam, headquarters for the Eastern Naval Command.

While Eastern Naval Command authorities expressed reservations over a major port coming up at Nakkapalli in Visakhapatnam citing security concerns, Durgarajupatnam was opposed by SHAR space centre at Sriharikota for security reasons and environmentalists that it could affect the Pulicat lake.

However Chittoor MP Chinta Mohan and MLAs from Nellore including Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy succeeded in allaying the apprehensions of SHAR authorities who gave conditional clearance that all activities should be stopped at the proposed port 48 hours before the launch operations from the space centre.

    Commercially viable

Sources explained that Durgarajupatnam, a natural port was close to Ennore, Chennai, the two public sector ports which were operating to their full capacity, and the private port Krishnapatnam. With several industries coming up in the Tada, Sri City, Naidupeta SEZs, the recently announced National investment and manufacturing zone for Chittoor, proximity to Chennai-Bangalore industrial corridor via Krishnapatnam port in Nellore, Durgarajupatnam emerged as the commercially and technically viable location for the port, sources said.

The port to be developed at a cost of about Rs.8,000 crore would spur economic development in Nellore and Rayalaseema belt. Once the gazette notification was issued, State government would take care of land acquisition. Being a Central public sector project, State’s role would only be of facilitator and all required clearances would come from central departments.

Friends! Am posting the essence of my representation to the PMO regarding the need for a dedicated fright corridor from Durgarajupatnam to Vepagunta to ensure connectivity to the West coast.Kindly support the cause.

Sub : Request for necessary steps to create Dedicated freight connectivity from the proposed major port site at Durgarajupatnam in Nellore district with Dedicated freight corridor joining at Vepagunta—Request for sanction of funds for Survey of new railway line from Durgarajupatnam to Vepagunta—Prayed necessary action –Regarding.

Pranam. This is to submit that the southern parts of Andhra Pradesh are witnessing an unprecedented development thanks to the announcement of Chennai-Bangalore industrial corridor and also a major port at Durgarajupatnam in Nellore district. People of Andhrapradesh would be indebted to your kind self for ever for your pragmatic contribution to the over all development of this part of the country .

Durgarajupatnam is expected to have very huge potential in view of Chennai—Bangalore industrial corridor which would in turn be connected to Bangalore-Mumbai-Delhi industrial corridors in course of time. The Dedicated freight corridor from Mangalore port to Ennore/Chennai ports via Bangalore is crossing at Vepagunta between puttur & Nagari in chittoor district. If Durgarajupatnam is connected to Vepagunta via Chittamuru,Mallam,Buduru(7km south of Nayudupeta), Thungamadugu, Alathur, Karakollu, Kovanur , Musilipedu, Chellur,Vadamalapeta
It would make it more meaningful and economical for all the beneficiary southern states as well as the corridors. This alignment would avoid the 2 notable rivers namely Swarnamukhi and Kalangi as well as Bandlarevu drain and the need for massive bridges.

Hence it is hereby prayed that your kind self may be pleased to instruct the concerned authorities in the planning commission, Railways, Shipping and commerce ministries to initiate steps for laying a new railway line for a distance of 90 km from Durgarajupatnam to Vepagunta for the kind act of which the people of this part of the country would be grateful to you sir throughout their lives.

  • Hurdles cleared for VSU campus (http://www.deccanchronicle.com/130620/news-current-affairs/article/hurdles-cleared-vsu-campus)

Nellore: The long wait to have its own campus appears to be over for Vikrama Simhapuri University. Paving way for the construction of buildings for the university at the site allotted in Kakuturu near the city, the government has issued a GO to pay compensation to the farmers cultivating the land in the past.

The government had allotted 83.3 acre for the university campus and Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy had laid the foundation stone in July 2011. He has also sanctioned Rs 15 crore for the construction of buildings then.

However, the construction work was not commenced because of resistance from the farmers demanding compensation for the land they were cultivating from a long time. Although the land belongs to the government, the people’s representatives of the area also backed the demand since majority of them are small and marginal farmers.

In this backdrop, district collector B. Sreedhar had sought the directions from the government on the compensation issue then. The government gave its nod for the payment after consulting with the advocate general and heads of various departments.

Sources in the revenue department said that they have identified 40 families cultivating 63 acre out of 83.3 acre given to the university and the list was also forwarded to the government.

The university authorities have been planning to rope in STUP Consultants, a global agency involved in architecture, to design the plans for administrative block, academic block and hostel at the campus. The consultants gave an audio visual presentation of the buildings they designed and built across the world at Hyderabad on Tuesday.

The agency had executed projects including IIM Ahmadabad, IIT Chennai, NIFT Bangalore, Space Research Centre, Trivandrum and Ministry of Food Technology among others.

Apart from the university authorities, finance minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, Nellore town and rural legislators, M. Sreedharkrishna Reddy and Anam Vivekananda Reddy and MLC Vakati Narayana Reddy have witnessed the presentation among others.

Speaking to this newspaper here on Wednesday, the VSU vice-chancellor, Prof. Rajarami Reddy, thanked the finance minister, people’s representatives and the district administration for putting an end to the legal tangle related to the land.

Referring to their plans to start the construction work in few months, he said that their students and the faculty are very eager to move to the new campus as early as possible.

  • Sub: Resolving the present impasse with respect to the new capital of Andrapradesh-Request for
considering the golden triangle of Gudur-Renigunta-Sri city SEZ on NH-5 as the new capital of AP- prayed necessary action-Regarding.

This is to submit most respectfully that the golden triangle of Gudur-Renigunta International airport-Sri city SEZ on NH-5 is ideal for being considered as the new capital of AP. In fact this was the location for the capital of Andhra state when it got separated from Madras state preferred by the then political stalwart/freedom fighter late Shri Tanguturi. Prakasam panthulu. But late Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy preferred Kurnool purely for narrow personal considerations because he wanted to punish his political betenoire late prof. N.G.Rangaji in particular and the Kamma community in general. The present demand for a separate state of Telangana wouldn’t have taken birth at all had the then political leadership heeded to the advice of late Shri Tanguturi. Prakasam panthulu. Andhra Pradesh is literally reaping the harvest for their past misdeeds /short sighted policies. Almost all our chief ministers till date are guilty of competing with each other in unjustifiable concentration of investment/development/appeasement of Hyderabad in most unpardonable manner as most of the chief ministers had personal monetary interests in and around Hyderabad. The salient features of the present proposal are submitted below for your kind perusal and consideration.

    1. Seven different universities located at Tirupathi/Nellore.

    2. World class Railway station at Tirupathi and Railway Junctions at Renigunta/ Gudur.

    3. International Airport at Tirupathi

    4. Krishnapatnam port and the newly sanctioned major port at Durgarajupatnam.

    5. Proximity to Penna, Swarnamukhi, Kalangi rivers and Telugu Ganga Project canal network throughout the proposed state capital region.

    6. Medical colleges/super-specialty hospitals at Tirupathi/Nellore.

    7. Availability of vast extents of barren government/private lands.
    (a) 2000 acres near yerpedu Mandal office (b) 4000 acres on Kailasagiri hills near Sri Kalahasti in s.no. 362
    (c) 2500 acres near Parlapalli to Karlapudi 5-10kms. On the East of Sri Kalahasti.
    (d) 5000 acres from Kandadu to Vadamalapeta within 10-15kms. From airport.
    (e) 1500 acres near Eguvaputhur in KVB Puram Mandal—all these sides have already been surveyed
    by APIIC , Tirupathi Zone.

    8. Well connected by road through NH-5/NH-205 and railway network.

    9. Close proximity to the neighboring state capitals of Chennai/Bangalore and advantage of spill over effect
of vast infrastructure and human resources that exists in and around those 2 capital cities.

    10. Falls under Chennai-Bangalore industrial corridor.

    11. This can satisfy the southern Andrapradesh especially Rayalaseema region also which is clamoring for
state capital/separate state of Rayalaseema as it is spread in Gudur, Nayudupeta and Tirupathi revenue divisions.

    12. High court can be located at Guntur.

    13. This area is free from FLOURIDE, FACTIONS and MAOISTS.

    14. Proximity to the proposed dedicated freight corridor from Chennai to Bangalore
    which would cross at Vadamalapeta.

    15. Devotion towards Lord Balaji Venkateswaraswamy may convince people from all regions of the state
    to accept this proposal.

    16. Advantage of exchanging/ utilizing huge man power /expertise in the neighboring capitals of Chennnai/Bangalore.

    17. Availability of vast extents of Government / private lands between(a) Gudur-Venkatagiri (b) Nayudupet-Venkatagiri (c) Rapur- Venkatagiri (d) Kandadu-Vadamalapeta (e) Yerpedu- Venkatagiri
    (f) Sri Kalahasti-Pichatur (g) B.N.Kandriga-Sullurpeta (h) Naidupeta-Durgarajupatnam major port
    (i) Gudur-Kota-Durgarajupatnam port (j) Sri Kalahasti-Tada growth center (k) Sri Kalahasti-Naidupet.

    18. Plenty of reservoirs / tanks which can be ear marked/reserved for drinking/industrial purpose with the help of Somasila/Kandaleru reservoirs/TGP canal network which runs through the proposed state capital diagonally.

    19. Nadikudi-Sri Kalahasti Railway line if completed would be an additional advantage for industrialization of backward areas in and around the proposed new capital.

    20. The proposed bullet train from Chennai to Bangalore by JICA of Japan may be extended to Tirupati/Gudur/Nellore also which would be a boon to the proposed new capital.

    Reasons for justifying this proposal

    A. Visakhapatnam has already emerged into an industrial city and very close to Dantewada/AOB Maoist Corridor.

    B. Vijayawada is a commercial capital known for criminal/anti social war lords who couldn’t be tamed /eliminated even by the best of our police officers known for their integrity, honesty and efficiency.

    C. Ongole has no infrastructure and is faction ridden. Goons owing allegiance to rival factions may play havoc with the state administrative machinery in an orchestrated and preplanned manner .
