  • im a little bit disappointed not even one of the contingents coming from surigao. where is the Bonok-Bonok Marajao Karajao Festival of Surigao City? the Inuwak Festival of Bacuag, Surigao del Norte na the current grand prize winner sa bonok-onok festival? how about the Byawanong Placer from Placer, Surigao del Norte?

  • even the camiguin contingent couldn't make it this year. =(

but the good thing about this is that the rooster is made up of mostly newcomers and first-timers.

one year will give us enough time to miss the sinulog favorites like the tribes from surigao and camiguin. =)

  • Showgirl costume for Cebu’s first lady

    Cebu Daily News
    First Posted 14:47:00 01/16/2008

CEBU CITY, Philippines - She will dance like a Las Vegas showgirl — but her costume won’t be skimpy.

Cebu City first lady Margot Osmeña and her group will imitate a Las Vegas show in the finale of this year’s Sinulog grand parade on Sunday.

Osmeña, 58, said she made sure that she will be wearing something that befits the occasion “because I don't want to make an issue out of the costume.”

“I have to be appropriately dressed because I am not joining a beauty contest. I’m not competing, but I will be closing the celebration,” she said.

Osmeña said she only dances as “halad” to the Sto. Nino and as her way of saying thank you to the people who helped in the preparation and watched the Sinulog festivities.

This is the sixth year that Osmeña will be dancing the Sinulog on the invitation of the organizing committee.

She joined as lead dancer of the Cebu City government contingent from 2003 to 2005.

She started doing the finale of the grand parade in 2006.

Malto designed a body suit made of metallic lamay, spandex and transparent mesh for the first lady. On top is a brassiere fully covered with Swarovsky crystals and a fully beaded wrap-around metallic skirt.

She will wear a beaded necklace and headpiece.

Malto said he has been working on the bead works of Osmeña’s costume for two weeks.

It is patterned after the costume of a female dancer in “Jubilee,” a famous show in Las Vegas.

He said he only added the body suit to make the costume look decent and fitting for a Sinulog dance.

Malto said Osmeña asked him to make her costume comfortable and not “bastos (indecent).”

“I already know what to do with her costume because she has been a client for three years already,” said Malto.

He said he had more difficulty doing the ruffled gown that Osmeña wore in 2006.

Osmeña donates her Sinulog costumes to the dance sport team, Malto said.

Osmeña said the Las Vegas concept is gleaned from the shows the Sinulog organizing committee members saw during their visit in Las Vegas in October 2007.

Dolly Suzara, Sinulog project director, said the finale will run for at least 10 minutes and will include the use of new technology in stage productions that they saw in Las Vegas.

Osmeña said she started to take dance lessons shortly after she and husband Mayor Tomas Osmeña arrived from their vacation in the US on January 6.

She jokingly said that Mayor Osmeña and her son, Miguel, looked nervous when they watched one of her practices last week.

“He (mayor Osmeña) gets amused with my dancing, but never mind. If I make a mistake, I make a mistake and I just smile. Anyway I’m not doing this as a profession. But I still do the best that I can.”

Osmeña recalled an incident in 2006 when she slipped while dancing.

She said she just stood up and continued dancing as if nothing happened.

She added that she does not dance to prove herself to anybody. /Reporter Doris C. Bongcac

  • PRO 6 braces for region's top festivals

Police Regional Office (PRO) 6 regional director Chief Supt. Wilfredo V. Dulay, Sr. ordered the creation of task groups to plan out security measures for the coming two biggest festivals in the region, the Ati-atihan of Kalibo, Aklan and Dinagyang of Iloilo.

Dulay said, while the Philippine National Police will play the lead role in the maintenance of peace and order during the two celebrations, the Philippine Army will actively render support role.

"About 500 additional PNP personnel from other units will be deployed to augment the security force in each of the festivals," Dulay said "we have also many force multipliers to help us in these endeavors."

Aklan Police Provincial Director Senior Supt. Benigno Durana, Jr. heads the Task Group Ati-Atihan 2008 while Iloilo City Director Senior Supt. Wesley Barayuga leads the Task Group Dinagyang 2008.

The two task groups are composed of several sub-task groups which will deal with crowd control, area security, traffic management, intelligence security and other concerns deemed necessary in order to provide maximum security coverage to the celebration.

Likewise, PNP Assistance Centers will be established in strategic areas to accommodate inquiries, complaints and other concerns. Also, medical teams in coordination with the Regional Health Service Office 6, Philippine National Red Cross and other volunteer groups will be posted to provide immediate medical aids to merry makers.

Dulay, however, appeals to those who will be attending the various activities during the festivals to be cautious of their safety and security. "Beware of pickpockets and robbers," he warned.

  • Globe Telecom ups Dinagyang sponsorship to P2M
    By Maricar M. Calubiran

Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) chair Ben Jimena yesterday said Globe Telecommunications had increased their sponsorship to the Dinagyang festival from P1,250,000 to P2,000,000. Subsequently, Globe becomes major sponsor of the 2008 Dinagyang festival.

Jimena said they have convinced top officials of the telecommunications firm to increase their sponsorship and be the major sponsor. Much effort in persuading all the sponsors is being made in order for the foundation to address its financial needs. They need at least P12,750,000 to finance all the activities.

Jimena expects that all the financial woes of the foundation would be resolved before the final day of the celebration. As a contingency plan, they first released the subsidy for the 15 competing tribes amounting P3,025,000.

The foundation, as well as Mayor Jerry Treñas, has issued several appeals to those individuals, companies and corporations for sponsorship to Dinagyang.

Meanwhile, 12 schools will participate in the drum and lyre and drum and bugle competition on January 25, 2008. There are 10 participants in the elementary and two from the secondary level.

Dr. Febe Cang, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent and chair of the Iloilo Dinagyang drum and lyre competition identified these elementary schools as Iloilo Central Elementary School, SPED-ISEC, Montes II Elementary School, Montes I Elementary School, Cubay Elementary School, Baluarte Elementary School, Jaro II Elementary School, Arevalo Elementary School, Guimbal Drum and Lyre and Rizal Elementary School.

Cang said, for the secondary level, only the Iloilo City National High School and Fort San Pedro National High School will compete for the drum and bugle. There are no other secondary schools in Iloilo City that has a drum and bugle corps.

Most of the schools in the city have the drum and lyre group. Schools outside the city with drum and bugle group were also invited to join the competition. There are schools in the different municipalities of Iloilo with drum and bugle corps, said Cang.

  • Governor Gwen Garcia as Goddess of the Sea

    http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/1079/gwenvi8.jpg
Governor Gwen Garcia tries on a replica of the crown she’ll wear during the Sinulog finale. International fashion designer Cary Santiago says he’ll fill it with crystals as part of her role as “Goddess of the Sea” when she dances with Bantayan’s Palawod contingent.

    http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/7084/gwengowndu2.jpg
A sketch of the gown he designed for Garcia.

From a sea of Bantayan Island dancers, she will emerge as the “Goddess of the Sea”.

With a glittering crown and gold lame gown with turquoise scales, Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia will perform in this year’s Sinulog finale, her fourth time to do so, this time with the Palawod dance group of Bantayan Island.

Palawod, which in Cebuano means “let’s go to the sea to fish”, will highlight Ceb, particularly Bantayan Island in the far north, as a fishing island group.

Sinulog spectators have com,e to look forward to the star appearance of two of Cebu’s high-profile women - Cebu City first lady Margot Osmeña, who will dance in the finale as part of a Las Vegas-style show and Governor Garcia, who will lead the Province of Cebu contingent as a sea deity.

Garcia will be accompanied by 100 dancers, 60 props men, 50 marching band members and 30 support staff in Sunday’s main performance at the Cebu City Sports Center.

Her five-minute dance will be done twice, once in the opening and the other toward the finale.

Garcia will emerge with an image of the Sto. Niño shortly after fishermen ask the Child Jesus for blessings for a good catch.

“The concept will focus on the rich marine sanctuary, so expect rich marine visual effects, like seahorses,” said artistic director Junjet Primor.

Joining Primor in the production are Vince Escario, artistic director for Palawod and over-all director/choreographer Victor Cuenco.

    http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/526/gwengown2zl7.jpg

Cary Santiago’s design that appeared in an international magazine. It will be restyled for the Sinulog parade.

The Palawod dance group is this year’s representative of the provincial government in the Sinulog Mardi Gras, as guest performer.

Garcia said her performance will be important for most Cebuanos who have witnessed her political disagreements with the city mayor.

“My joining the presentation should prove that I and Mayor Tomas Osmeña can rise above our official differences,” she said.

“We can pay homage to the Sto. Niño together, which is our common bond. And we share that same love for the Sto. Niño.”

When she got the mayo’rs invitation to dance in this year’s Sinulog, she did not hesitate.

“I immediately said yes, of course. Mosayaw gyud ko,” she said.

The governor started rehearsals Wednesday night.

Primor said she was a fast learner and could master the moves quickly.

Her costume by international Cebuano designer, Cary Santiago, involves intricate details with graduated scale shapes from the bodice to the knee, with the gown flaring to a soft hem.

The mermaid-cut gown will be of metallic gold with a touch of turquoise.

The original gown design, recently published in an international haute couture magazine, was sleeveless and had a plungine bodice.

It will be modified for the Sinulog performance with tight long sleeves and a more modest neckline.

A crown, inspired by those worn by Miss Universe beauties, and a cape will be the finishing touch.

The filligree headress, created by Santiago, will be covered with crystals, and glittering glod and turquoise details.

“She will be a modern queen in a mythical scene,” said Santiago.

“I want my design to accentuate the governor’s personality, not overpower her.”

    Street-dancing at its merriest

IF you think that ultimate parties only happen in Manila, think again. In Cebu, one can feel the thrill and excitement as the Queen City of the South anticipates the celebration of the most grand and colorful festival in the Philippines—Sinulog.

The annual festival, a pride of Cebuanos—is celebrated every third Sunday of January to honor the Child Jesus, more popularly known as the Santo Niño. The Sinulog boasts of upbeat rhythm and sounds, colorful parades that will truly get any reveler in the groove of things. Behind all these, is a story on where, how and when this annual tradition came about.

The Sinulog was essentially conceptualized as a dance to remember the pagan rituals of the Cebuano’s back in the era of the Spaniards. During those times, the dance was in honor of their wooden idols called “anitos.” However, when Fernando Magallanes crossed Cebu’s shores, he gave an image of the Santo Niño as a baptismal gift to Hara Humanay (wife of Rajah Humabon). Her name was later changed to Queen Juana, in honor of Carlos I’s mother, bearing the same name. The natives and the rulers of the whole island were also baptized and converted to the Christian faith. Upon receiving the image of the Santo Niño, Queen Juana was said to have danced with joy. Upon seeing her so happy, the people danced along with her and so was born the first Sinulog.

Most Sinulog dances today dramatize the coming of the Spaniards and the presentation of the Santo Niño to the queen. One of the most popular images up to this day depict Queen Juana holding the image of the Santo Niño and using it to drive away demons and bad spirits which was believed to have caused sickness and death to her people.

Since the time of the Spanish conquistadors, the devotion to the Santo Niño has grown in the Philippines, most especially in the Visayas. People from different parts of Cebu and from all over the country would make a yearly pilgrimage to the basilica, join the procession and participate in the fiesta.

In 1980, the local government of Cebu City, together with then-Regional Director of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development—David Odilao Jr.—organized the very first Sinulog parade. He gathered a group of students, made them wear moro-moro costumes and taught them to dance to the beat of the drums. That was the official start of the annual street-dancing parade that would eventually become a competition that brings pride and merriment to the barangays, towns and organizations that make up the province of Cebu.

Practically, everything stops in Cebu to focus on the celebration of the Sinuolog festival. This weekend will be not much different since all sectors and communities will take part and showcase the best of what they’ve got. What makes Sinulog different from the Ati-atihan, is that it has a historical focus rather than just a mere implementation of a ritual. The Sinulog festival tells of the history on how the Filipino culture evolved from a pagan past to a Christian present.

For some, Sinulog has evolved into a commercialized tourist attraction from just being a cultural event. It has various contests like the grand competition for the provinces’ various dance troupes, the trade fairs and the search for the Festival Queen who embodies the genuine beauty and charm of the Cebuana. Truly, the Sinulog festival has become a visual spectacle, a cultural phenomenon, a feast for the senses. Pit Señor!

  • Aside of Dinagyang Festival next week, Molo District will celebrate the Sadsad sa Parian.

Let's welcome the Ivatan in our festival.

Tribe from Batanes to join Sadsad sa Parian
    By Maricar M. Calubiran

Tribu Ivatan of Batanes will participate in the Sadsad sa Parian procession on Sunday morning. The group will join the three Dinagyang tribes from Molo – Tribu Parianon, Tribu Silak and Tribu Kalubihan – and the drum and bugle corps and drum and lyre corps of different schools in Molo district.

Tribu Ivatan's representative Jay Dadivas yesterday confirmed their presence during the feast day of the Señor Sto. Niño. Sadsad sa Parian is a parish-based activity in reverence and in honor of the Child Jesus. It is both a religious and cultural affair.

Tribu Ivatan is the only contesting group in the Dinagyang competition which comes from outside of the city and entire Western Visayas. The group's presentation already created curiosity from the Ilonggos, being a new tribe. Like the other competing tribes, they will execute their own performance in honoring the Child Jesus and with a touch of the Ivatan's culture.

The group traveled all the way from Batanes through a C-130 plane.

Rev. Fr. Tomas Delicana, parish priest of St. Anne, gladly welcomed the Ivatan's participation in the Sadsad sa Parian. Sadsad sa Parian is a joint effort of the parish, Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) headed by Brgy. Capt. Reyland Hervias and the Knights of Columbus led by businessman Rolando Layson.

Apart from merrymaking, Fr. Delicana urged the people to attend the masses in honor of Señor Sto. Niño. The Triduum Masses already started yesterday afternoon. After the mass, the four-day food festival opened.

One of the must-see activities in the Sadsad sa Parian is the Sadsad sa Parian Niño 2008 contest. At present, there are 16 children who registered to join the contest on Sunday morning after the procession.

According to Mrs. Teddy Manzano, chair of the contest, the 1st prizewinner will receive P2,000 plus trophy and token, 2nd prize P1,500 plus trophy and token and 3rd P1,000 plus trophy and token.

The winners will be judged according to their costume, physical appearance, interview and audience appeal. The contestants for the contest are children (male) aging five to nine years old.

According to Ms. Anne Rosel of the committee on program and cultural events, the Molo Elementary School I Rhythm Band, Baluarte Drum Corps, Iloilo City National High School, I. Arroyo Elementary School Choral Group, I. Arroyo Elementary School Folk Dance Group and the Parish Youth Ministry will entertain the people during the cultural presentation set at 7:30 in the morning of January 19, 2008.

While, Insp. Danilo de los Santos, chief of police of Molo district assured the peace and order during the duration of the activity. Aside from the police, tanod members of barangays near the Molo church will also help in the crowd control and maintenance of peace and order.

The police and tanods will secure the food festival area every night. There are 20 kiosks situated inside the plaza. The stallholders would sell delicacies from Molo especially Pancit Molo. Live bands will also perform every night in the food festival.

34 IHHRA members to join weeklong Dinagyang food fest
    By Maricar M. Calubiran

Thirty-four restaurants under the Iloilo Hotels Restaurants and Resorts Association (IHRRA) will participate in the weeklong food festival starting January 21-27, 2008 along Delgado Street.

IHRRA President Robert Ferrer said owners of the 34 restaurants already confirmed their participation to the food festival.

This the second time the association will hold a one- week food festival. IHRRA first held a weeklong festival in December 2007 during the "Christmas Kanta Ta" project of ABS-CBN. The television network has been the partner of the association in all its projects.

Ferrer said they decided to extend the food festival to one week this year due to public demand. He said it is a gamble and risk for them to hold a weeklong food festival but the restaurant owners are hopeful that the activity will be successful.

He added international and native cuisines will be found at the food festival area. In previous years, all kinds of barbecue from chicken to pork are the best sellers in all the kiosks. Ferrer also assured that foods sold at the food fest area are clean and delicious.

Meanwhile, John Nofuente, IHRRA's past president, said they will try to convince Balay Kalan-an, one of their members to sell exotic foods at the food festival as one innovation and must try new delicacy during the food festival.

Moreover, Nofuente assures the safety and security of all the people who want to go to the food festival. Police personnel, both in uniform and plain clothes, will be deployed to the area. A K-9 dog from the Philippine Coast Guard will also be stationed as additional security measure.

Nofuente also said each restaurant is required to have a whistle. The whistle will serve as signal from the kiosk asking for police assistance in case there is trouble.

There is a standing order for the food sellers to cut the pointed part of the barbecue sticks before serving it to the customers or transfer the food in paper plates. Unruly customers could use the barbecue sticks as weapon, said Nofuente.

Two ambulances will be positioned in the area to cater the emergency health assistance of the people. Large crowd is expected tol gather during the food festival specifically in areas near the band. There will be different bands to entertain the customers every night.

    PIA Press Release
    2008/01/18

    Dinagyang Festival fires opening salvo

Iloilo City (18 January) -- Both local and foreign tourists had a glimpse of the participating tribes for the 2008 Dinagyang Festival Ati-Competition when the opening salvo blasted off along selected streets of this city yesterday (January 18).

Dinagyang is observed every fourth week-end of January in honor of Senor Sto. Nino. This year, the festivity revolves on the theme "One heart, one mind for Senor Sto. Nino."

Ben Jimena, City Tourism Officer and Festival's Executive Director said the participation of the tribes in the opening salvo as well as in other 2008 Dinagyang activities determined by the Dinagyang Foundation is one of the requirements of the competition.

The Dinagyang Ati-Competition is one of the highlights of the festivities where tribes composed of dark-brown colored warriors perform in music dominantly using drums in identified judging areas.

Unlike in the previous years, the 20 competing tribes on Sunday, January 27, will perform in four judging areas instead of five. These judging areas are the Freedom Grandstand, Provincial Capitol, Quezon-Ledesma and Ma. Clara Rotunda.

The 20 competing tribes are Tribu Ivatan, Baryohan, San Pedro, Binhi, Hamili, Paghidaet, Angola, Kalubihan, Molave, Ilonganon, Pag-asa, Silak, Pana-ad, Atub-Atub, Himala, Familia Sagrada, Aninipay, Pari-anon, Ang Taga Jaro and Bantu.

For two years in a row, the Dinagyang Festival had been cited by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) as Best Tourism Event in the country. It has also received international recognitions such as given by the United Nations Development Programme in a CityNet conference in Katmandu, Nepal as Best Practice in the Promotion of the Localization of the Millennium Development Goals and by the Asian Development Bank as Best Practice in Public and Private Cooperation.

Last year, Dinagyang also emerged first runner-up in the Aliwan Fiesta 2007 held in Manila and awarded Best in Music in the Western Visayas Tourism Assembly held in Bacolod City. (PIA)

  • @ SMK, excited na ko sa inyong "exclusive" coverage sa CPDRC inmates' Sinulog performance! Basin naa pud ang CNN karon dinha.

Ate Honey, kami ang CNN didto. hehe

Bitaw, if only the inmates are allowed to dance for the Grand Parade, its really worth it. You can really see discipline and preparation involved, specially in the costume and props. But good thing they were still able to share it to their fellow Cebuanos.

    Good job CPDRC! :okay:

  • Fireworks to brighten Dinagyang attraction
    By Jeehan V. Fernandez

FOR the first time, Dinagyang Festival revelers will be treated to more than an hour grand fireworks display at the old airport’s runway behind SM City Iloilo in Mandurriao district starting at 7pm of Jan. 26.

“It will be much bigger, very entertaining and will add beauty for Iloilo. The 18 fireworks display will last for six-minute each. The sky will be sparkling,” stressed Robert Alor, organizer of “Luces in the Sky” as one of the special events in the 40th edition of Dinagyang.

This 1st Iloilo Dinagyang Pyrolympics 2008 is an invitational aerial fireworks competition to be participated by 18 shooters, all members of the Philippine Association of Pyrotechnics and Fireworks Manufacturers and Dealers.

They are Six J Fireworks, Tiger Fireworks, National Fireworks, 888 Prosperity Fireworks, St. Michael Fireworks, Blue Thunder Fireworks, AA Fireworks, and Mariet Fireworks—all from Bulacan; Dumaguete Surf Station Fireworks—Dumaguete City; Wow Fireworks – Tagbilaran City; Hercs Fireworks – Laguna; Rosca Fireworks – Cavite; Frenz M. Fireworks – General Santos City; Avila Firework and JP Fireworks of Cebu, and Scorpion Fireworks – Iloilo City.

“We hope to make the competition yearly once the manufacturers see that we are supportive. The idea started with one shooter who opened up the showcase. We are surprised that more are interested –they believe it will draw crowds,” Alor said.

He added that fire trucks will be on standby near the venue to ensure the safety of the public.

The champion will take home P100,000 while the second placer will receive P50,000. The third placer – P30,000 while consolation prize is P10,000.

“It’s not about the prize but the prestige,” Alor said, adding the prizes are not even enough to make up for the expenses of fireworks’ manufacturers and dealers.

Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) executive director Ben Jimena said: “It will be an exciting Saturday night and a welcome treat to visitors.”

“It will be a big, big fireworks display. It is one way to promote fireworks in festivals—and the manufacturers have seen the big potential of promotion in Dinagyang,” he added.

  • Iloilo’s Dinagyang Festival kicks off
    By Ronilo Ladrido Pamonag
    Saturday, January 19, 2008

ILOILO CITY – Iloilo’s top tourism event, the Dinagyang Festival, formally kicked off at the city’s Freedom Grandstand yesterday afternoon.

During the opening salvo, tribes showed the public a preview of what their performances would be during the festival highlight on Jan. 27.

Parts of the city proper were closed to vehicular to accommodate the performance of the tribes.

According to the event organizer, the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI), the opening salvo also signals the start of various Dinagyang-related activities organized by the private sector.

A citywide cleanup drive is scheduled today to “prepare the house for the arrival of its visitors,” as IDFI executive director and city tourism officer Benito Jimena put it.

Firetrucks will go around different districts this morning to signal the start of the cleanup.

Though still short of funds, the IDFI is promising a much-improved Dinagyang Festival this year.

For one, Tribu Ivatan from Batanes will be one of the competing groups. This is the first time that a contingent from outside Western Visayas is taking part in the city’s top tourist-drawer.

Also, the festival’s official color motif has been changed to dark brown for a more realistic portrayal of the native Atis.

There will also be a three-hour fireworks festival on Jan. 26 at the old airport site. Top fireworks manufacturers from around the country will be participating.

Sinulog is best experienced live and first-hand...

television couldnt even hope to capture half of the festival's essence, the heat, the crowds, the intensity, and the inexplicable desire to dance in full view of the public...it's really something that an electronic box cant provide...

@sinjin: try going out for the festivities, who knows, in this age where miracles seem to be a rarity, maybe the Holy Child could spare you one small favor and you'd be leaving the place completely well and healthier than before

  • Food festival rules bared

ILOILO City – The Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation has laid down rules to ensure peace and order during the two-day food festival slated January 26 and 27.

Engr. Ely Bagtasus, chairman of the kiosks committee, said liquor should not be served to minors especially girls 15 years old and below. Last year, he mentioned that even minors were seen drinking hard liquors.

In addition, he reminded all participants to provide proper garbage areas and clean up before 6 a.m. the next day.

“Karaokes will not be allowed,” he added.

Bagtasus, meanwhile, declared that this year, kiosks being manned by fraternities will be clustered in one area so that it would be easier to have them properly monitored. Last year, it was reported that some of the commotions were caused by fraternity groups.

The committee will also provide portable toilets in strategic areas during the food festival.

Bagtasus said kiosks found with violations will be shut down and their payment, reimbursed.

  • Dinagyang Festival fires opening salvo

(PIA)

  • Boat in Cebu fluvial parade sinks, passengers safe (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/77161/Boat-in-Cebu-fluvial-parade-sinks-passengers-safe)
    01/19/2008 | 01:34 PM

A small motorboat taking part in a fluvial parade for the Santo Niño (child Jesus Christ) sank in Cebu, but its passengers were safe, QTV reported on Saturday.

The report said the incident took place while the parade was on its way from Mandaue to Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu province.

Rescuers managed to save all 18 passengers and crew of the boat, which was escorting a vessel bearing the images of the Santo Niño, and Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Investigators believed that a lit firecracker might have accidentally exploded and bore a hole in the boat’s hull, causing it to sink. - GMANews.TV

it seems that the people behins the publicity and media relations committee is not aware of the power of the internet.

They have not realized yet the power of cyberia. Maybe we need to show them some presentations with figures so that they will absorb the power of cyberia.

Hi Southernbelle. Pit Senyor! Thanks for the term but I am no guru, just an ordinary "guro". I feel old when people call me that. Hahaha!

We don't have the name of the composer of the 1888 gozos but I bet it sure must have been an ordinary indio because if it were composed by a Spanish priest, he'll sure put his name as the one who made it.

Here is the new version dedicated to all Cebuano SSC members.

Ug didto gihangyo nila, nga kaluy-an nimo sila

Kanamo maluoy ka unta nga kanimo nangilaba (2x)

Nangayo kami kanimo nga ang matahom mong larawan
Sa sulod sa kalag namo makahimog puluy-anan
Kay sa tanang kinahanglan, ikaw among dalangpan

Kanamo maluoy ka unta nga kanimo nangilaba (2x)

  • One million turn up for Niño
By Allan I. Varquez Sun.Star Staff Reporter
With Nancy R. Cudis & Jovy S. Taghoy

CLOSE to a million people joined or lined up to watch a nearly three-hour procession in honor of Señor Sto. Niño yesterday afternoon.

Umbrellas in hand, 150,000 to 200,000 devotees, according to police estimates, endured the drizzle and the 1.7-kilometer walk. The rest packed the Pilgrim Center at the Basilica, with thousands more spilling out in the streets or lining the procession route.

Cebu City Police Office Director Patrocinio Comendador estimated that the crowd, including those who attended the mass after the procession and those along the procession route, was close to a million.

The murder of a priest in Tabawan, Tawi-Tawi last Tuesday was highlighted at the pontifical mass that began around 4:45 p.m., immediately after the procession ended.

“Live in truth and honesty like a child taliwala sa daghang bakak ug mga pagsulay nga maoy nakaingon sa atong kalisod karon (amid all lies and trials that caused today’s hardships),” said Bishop John Du in his homily.

He mentioned Fr. Rey Roda, who took charge of a religious mission in Tabawan for 10 years until his death in the hands of suspected Abu Sayyaf members.

In separate interviews, those who joined the procession considered yesterday’s event special because they said it made them feel the presence of the Sto. Niño.

It was also an opportunity for them to make a little sacrifice by joining the walk, regardless of the weather.

For wheelchair-bound Joseph Inoc, 15, of Barangay Hipodromo, Cebu City, his paralysis did not pose an obstacle.

    Sacrifice

During the procession, he and his mother shared their umbrella with strangers walking behind the Sto. Niño carroza (float) from P. del Rosario St. to the corner of P. Gomez and Burgos Sts.

The carrozas of St. Joseph and of the Virgin Mother preceded that of the Holy Child.

“He was feverish since Friday but he really begged to tag along and join the procession,” Inoc’s mother Elessa Naul said in Cebuano.

The procession started around 2:05 p.m., when Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, carrying a replica of the historic Sto. Niño image, came out of the basilica’s wooden doors.

Devotees gathered at the pilgrim center greeted him with applause.

Vidal then handed the replica to Rev. Andrew Batayalo, who placed it inside a glass case on a carroza.

Soldiers and University of the Visayas (UV) police interns formed a protective wall as the carroza left the basilica compound to start the procession.

    Meeting

Amid the continuous pealing of church bells, the devotees released red balloons until the Sto. Niño carroza reached the corner of D. Jakosalem St.

The procession was so long that by the time the frontliners returned to the Basilica del Sto. Niño, the tail end was still in church.

“At 2:40 p.m. the procession already reached the basilica, but the end portion had yet to leave the grounds,” Comendador said in Cebuano.

Around 20 minutes more passed before those at the rear of the procession started moving, he said.

Col. Roque Calagui, 7th RCDG commander, said that 639 soldiers and reservists from his unit helped form a three-layer cordon for the carroza.

Members of the Cebu City Bikers Association, 308 UV police interns, and fourth-year students from different private schools also served as human barriers along the 1.7 kilometer procession route.

People along the way released balloons, as a fireworks display greeted the procession.

    Power cut

Comendador said no major problem was encountered, and he credited it to Central Command personnel and civilian volunteers who took charge of crowd control.

However, over 30 people who fainted and five whose blood pressure levels rose were taken to first aid stations.

“(But) we do not have a single case that needs hospital attention. Maybe the cold weather contributed to a not so problematic situation,” said SFO4 Bernardo del Mar of the Bureau of Fire Protection.

He was in charge of the three medical stations inside the basilica premises.

A minor incident involving confetti from party poppers though, prompted Senior Insp. Aileen Recla to ask a group of people in the procession to refrain from using them.

According to a report sent to Comendador, confetti hurled into an electric post on P. del Rosario St. got entangled in a power transformer, causing a brief brownout in the area.

The incident also stalled the procession for a few minutes.

    Memory

Earlier in the morning, the steady drizzle that started past 9 a.m. did not dampen the expectant mood of the crowd at the pilgrim center, as they anticipated the arrival of the images of Sto. Niño and Our Lady of Guadalupe from Mandaue City.

When drumbeats and trumpet sounds marked the entry of the images to the basilica at nearly 10 a.m., several devotees unfurled their umbrellas, adding color to the solemn religious gathering.

The Catholic flock waved their hands while others released balloons and threw confetti when the images passed before them.

Before the altar, heavily decorated with flowers, men and women in native costumes began a reenactment of the planting of Magellan’s Cross in 1521 upon the arrival of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

It was at this site where Rajah Humabon, his wife Queen Juana, along with their followers, were baptized Carlos and Juana and became the first Christian Filipinos.

Incense smoke filled the air while thousands of devotees craned their necks to watch the reenactment of the first mass.

Following the presentations, Msgr. Cris Garcia, chairman of the archdiocese commission on worship, officiated a solemn mass.

His homily centered on the need to renew one’s baptismal vows. Holy water was sprinkled on the devotees as a sign of renewed baptismal vows.

Garcia could not help but comment on the weather, saying that it seemed like Mary, mother of Jesus, was giving the faithful some shade with her veil.

He was also grateful that while a pump boat was reported to have capsized during the fluvial procession, no one was hurt.

At that, the crowd cheered and applauded. (Related story, A4)

Before the mass ended a concise narration on the history of the images of Sto. Niño and Our Lady of Guadalupe was shared.

Despite the drizzle, devotees remained at the church grounds to watch four contingents—Copragia Sto. Niño, Mabolo, Guadalupe, and San Diego dancers—dance to the beat of the Sinulog.

Devotees, mass participants and revelers could be in for more drizzles today, as the weather bureau Pag-asa projects the weather to be cloudy with rainshowers and thunderstorms. (AIV/JST/NRC)

Jesus Christ! si Santo Niño!

CCTV ?? (or i dunno unsa na channel) gave a way better Sinulog Coverage than NBN! we had to settle watching it on TV kanina. it was very difficult for the whole family to go to uptown area. we're supposed to stay at the Club Ultima building. :(

i could imagine how jampacked the downtown-uptown area during the entire day. all roads indeed lead to Cebu City! we went to Virgen de Regla church in Lapu-Lapu for the sunday mass and we saw very long long long queue, long lines for the ferry boat bound to Cebu City. even the jeepney and v-hire terminal. realizing how hard it is to go to the Sinulog venue, we ended up at the SM Mall! yeah! bought myself a brand new TV for my room. didto me sa Northwing Appliance Center. hehehe so many people! grabe ka crowded! and it was just 12 noon. the people who flocked at the SM mall is just the "spill-over", and that gave me the idea how much more crowded the Sinulog venue was. sayang, this could have been my first Sinulog after about 5 years. pero ok lang, enjoyed watching it on TV man sad and the Grand Finale is.... Grand! worth it jud ang P550 nga ticket to those who watched at the grand stand :) naa pa man next year.

by the way, tomorrow na ang Awarding Ceremony for the Sinulog performers. Will still be at the Grandstand, 1pm. gusto ko mu watch but i'm not sure if i can make it. i'll go there with my sis. not sure either if naa pay tickets or unsa. the only way to get a good view is to be there really really early. last year, read it on the news that the grandstand was still jam-packed during the awarding ceremony. it's just like a Sinulog replay but the difference is, winners ang tanan mag perform. :)

  • Please read!

Just before the Sinulog fever wanes please allow me to share this. Actually, I was in the basilica a few hours ago at the invitation of my friend, Fr. Dominador Besares, OSA. While we were watching several people offering their own dance to the Child Jesus of Cebu, I was able to pick up one of those petitions scribbled by a devotee tied to a balloon which had fallen. This really struck me.

O Sr. Santo Niño nagasalig ako knimo kong wala ka wala pod me, mangamatay me basta wala ka Sr. Santo Niño.

I wish I had such faith!

  • Priest clarifies Dinagyang religiosity
    By Jeehan V. Fernandez

A CATHOLIC priest wants to put an end to contentions raised on the religiosity of Dinagyang Festival, Iloilo City’s premiere fiesta.

Celebrated every 4th weekend of January, Dinagyang had its beginnings in 1968 when Fr. Sulpicio Ebderes, OSA brought a replica of the image of the Sr. Sto. Niño from Cebu City to San Jose Parish church in Plaza Libertad.

The image has been enshrined there since then where a novena in His honor is held every Friday.

Dinagyang, a festive celebration in honor of Sto. Niño, is the best tourism event in the country as recognized by the Association of the Tourism Officers of the Philippines (ATOP) the last two years.

Several contentions have been raised that Dinagyang has become “commercialized” and its religiosity “has been fading over the years.”

But San Jose Parish Church priest Achilles Secio, OSA, said there’s no truth about losing Dinagyang’s religiosity.

“I wanted to clarify issues that Dinagyang has no more religiosity – that’s not absolutely true,” stressed Secio.

“Though, the religiosity of Dinagyang has been lacking in emphasis—we want to inculcate to people that dancing is prayer to Sto. Niño while masses are also celebrated in His honor,” Secio explained.

The liturgical committee of Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation, Inc. (IDFI) invites the public to join the arrival of St. Niño from Cebu at Fort San Pedro on Jan. 23 at 7am; fluvial procession, solemn procession and mass on Jan. 25 at 3pm; and grand masses before the Kasadyahan and Dinagyang tribes competition on Jan. 26-27 at 6:30am.

“We ask for cooperation on this merrymaking for Sto. Niño. City schools have been cooperative in celebrating masses at the full-packed San Jose Church,” Secio said.

The priest expects a grandiose religious fluvial parade and foot procession for the 40th edition of Dinagyang with the theme “One Mind One Heart for Señor Santo Niño.”

Initiated in 1969, the fluvial procession kicks off the festivities Friday enjoining at least 30 pump boats carrying the Sto. Niño for a parade along Iloilo River from Fort San Pedro to Aduana.

After which, a foot procession will start passing all the way through the Iloilo Provincial Capitol and going back to the San Jose Parish church where a mass will be celebrated.

Jun Rivera, chair of the liturgical committee of IDFI said Dinagyang was conceived as a devotion to Sr. Sto. Niño.

He noted that it used to be called “Ati-atihan sa San Jose,”—a parish-initiated celebration in His honor way back in 1968-1976—highlighting the Feast of Sto. Niño which falls on the third Sunday of January.

Several tribes which have been consistent participants of the annual festival are said to have considered the Dinagyang revelries as their “devotion” to Sr. Sto. Niño.

Rivera, who once handled a tribe, said they were performing on their own expense—crafting costumes out of indigenous materials.

He said they had even sooted their skins black with charcoal during the revelries which could last for about three days but performers now only use latex paint which can be easily removed.

Rivera said the black-skinned Ati look-alike revelers enjoying the street-dancing while chanting “Viva Sr. Sto. Niño!” were even “mocked as fool by laughing spectators.”

Now, the competing tribes are operating on millions of pesos in subsidies sponsored by IDFI even as the city’s premiere feast has evolved into “commercialization.”

Rivera hinted that the Dinagyang revelers’ faith “was almost forgotten when the subsidies have started to come in.”

NOw, who says that the Sinulog is just about the mardigras? There is something deeper in it.

Di ko ka-explain sa ako gibati bay...I wish nga hatagan siya ni Sto. Nino og nindot nga trabaho... :)

    By Maricar M. Calubiran

The Philippine Association of Pyrotechnics and Fireworks Manufacturers and Dealers in the country will hold its 1st Iloilo Dinagyang Pyrolympics 2008 dubbed as "Luces in the Sky". The aerial fireworks competition is one of the special events in the Dinagyang festival.

Robert Alor, organizer of the Luces in the Sky said the fireworks competition would be participated by Scorpio Fireworks (Iloilo City), Six J Fireworks (Bulacan), Tiger Fireworks (Bulacan), Nation Fireworks (Bulacan), Dumaguete Surf Station Fireworks (Dumaguete City), Avila Fireworks (Cebu), Wow Fireworks (Tagbilaran City), 888 Prosperity Fireworks (Bulacan), LF Fireworks (Bulacan) and Starlight Fireworks (Bulacan).

The other contestants are Blue Thunder Fireworks (Bulacan), AA Fireworks (Bulacan), Hercs Fireworks (Laguna), Rosca Fireworks (Cavite), Fren'z M Fireworks and Pyrotechnic (General Santos City), Mariet Fireworks (Bulacan) and JP Fireworks (Cebu).

Alor said Ilonggos, as well as foreign and local tourists, who are in the city should not miss the opportunity to watch the Luces in the Sky competition. The members of the fireworks association are raring to demonstrate their display.

The first prizewinner in the fireworks competition will receive P100,000 cash prize, 2nd prize P50,000 and 3rd prize P30,000. The competition is set on the eve of January 26, 2007, said Alor.

The fireworks display and contest is included in the long list of activities lined up by the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation Inc. (IDFI) for this year's Dinagyang Festival after seeing the potential of fireworks industry in the city especially in Arevalo district. Arevalo district is considered as the fireworks capital of Iloilo City.

  • and what can they say about our very own Sinulog?

“It’s terrific, the Sinulog is world-class. The choreography, imagination and execution just gets better and better every year,” said Sen. Manuel Roxas II, who watched the entire parade from the grandstand.

“The amount of effort done by these people is just amazing. The creativity of the Filipinos, especially the Cebuanos, really shines when they make something so basic into something ingenious,” said Atty. Raymond Fortun, lawyer of deposed president Joseph Estrada, blended in with a mob of photographers taking pictures of the dancers, floats and higantes.

It was Fortun’s fourth time to watch the Sinulog, but the first time he took part by taking photos, though he is not joining the photo contest. “It’s just for my personal consumption. I plan to post them in my Multiply account,” said Fortun, a new shutterbug who described the festival as “a photographer’s paradise”.
